The Farrer by-election begins! Formally...

Today, the Speaker of the House of Representatives issued the writ for the Farrer by-election to the Electoral Commissioner – formally commencing the by-election period. This follows the earlier announcement of Farrer by-election dates.

Enrolment closing soon!

The enrolment deadline is now just days away. Farrer residents need to be correctly enrolled by 8pm on Wednesday 8 April.

  • Live in Farrer? You can check, enrol or update your enrolment on the AEC website now.
  • Approximately 123,000 people were enrolled in Farrer at the start of 2026.
    • This represented around 98% of all eligible people in Farrer

Candidate nominations

While nomination forms for the by-election have been available for some time to enable early preparation, from tomorrow intending candidates can submit their completed nomination paperwork to the AEC.

  • Candidate nominations close at midday on Monday 13 April.
  • Candidates will then be declared at a public event at midday on Tuesday 14 April

*A ballot draw to determine the order of candidates on the ballot paper will also be conducted on Tuesday 14 April. Find out how this works.

Temporary staff wanted

We’re recruiting more than 700 staff to help us run the by-election. We have paid roles available across Farrer but we are particularly interested in people to put up their hands if they live in Albury, Balranald, Finley, Griffith, Mathoura, Tooleybuc or Wentworth.
