The latest annual estimation of Indigenous enrolment shows that approximately 93.8 per cent of all eligible Indigenous Australians are enrolled to vote.
Electoral Commissioner Jeff Pope said the 30 June 2026 figures show a modest growth of 0.8 per cent from this time last year with an estimated 20,000 additional Indigenous Australians on the electoral roll.
"There is a small gap to the overall national enrolment rate, which sits at 97.8 per cent, but the maintenance of high Indigenous enrolment in the past few years is incredibly pleasing," Mr Pope said.
"Each state and territory is marginally different with some estimated enrolment rates increasing slightly, some stable and others with a slight dip - but all maintaining high levels."
"Indigenous enrolment rates in New South Wales and Tasmania are almost equal to overall enrolment rates in those jurisdictions, while Western Australia and the Northern Territory continue to have the highest proportion of unenrolled Indigenous Australians."
"We have seen a slight decline in the South Australian rate, largely driven by the pausing of direct enrolment activity that normally happens in the lead up to state elections."
"Enrolment is a critical building block for participation in elections but there is obviously so much more to it than just that," Mr Pope said.
"To understand and connect with elections, all citizens require information about how elections work, how to participate and why their vote matters."
"Our Indigenous Electoral Participation Program is now an enduring body of work, which allows staff across the country to build on the important connection they’ve had within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities."
"Long term and meaningful engagement and the input of local voices empowering their own communities is something we feel is very important."
"Our message of ‘why vote’, along with familiarity and comfort with the voting process, will be a continuing focus for our communication and engagement work leading up to the next federal election."
