The Australian Electoral Commission has released the 2025 Indigenous enrolment rate, with an estimated 93.0 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples now enrolled to vote.
The figure marks the first time Indigenous enrolment figures are estimated to exceed 600,000 people, with over 16,000 additional First Nations people estimated to have enrolled to vote in the past year.
While there were small fluctuations in state and territory percentages, as is expected between electoral events, all recorded an increase in the number of Indigenous Australians enrolled.
Acting Electoral Commissioner Jeff Pope said he is pleased to see the enrolment rate is keeping pace, given the Indigenous Australian population is growing at a faster rate than the general population.
“Indigenous enrolment figures have grown from 74.7 per cent since 2017, with an estimated increase of almost 249,000 additional enrolments in that time,” Mr Pope said.
Mr Pope said those numbers reflect the work put into the AEC’s partnership model with Indigenous Australian communities.
“We’ve been working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities for many years now as part of our commitment to closing the gap in the Indigenous enrolment rate.”
“There is clearly still more work to do, but we’re very pleased with the significant increases to the figures over the past several years,” Mr Pope said.
The AEC is committed to continuing efforts to improve Indigenous electoral participation, and in conjunction with partner organisations has visited 50 communities since the 2025 federal election.
This has included enrolment efforts, Yarn and Learn education sessions, and participating in community and cultural events.
Mr Pope said the AEC prioritises employing local community members to drive electoral participation.
“Outreach requires long-term and meaningful engagement, ensuring we have local voices empowering their own communities is key,” Mr Pope said.
Indigenous enrolment rates for Tasmania and New South Wales are now almost equal to the national enrolment rate, sitting at 98.0 per cent and 97.2 per cent respectively.
The increase in South Australian Indigenous enrolment figures from 89.9 per cent to 94.0 per cent means Western Australia and the Northern Territory remain the only jurisdictions with enrolment rates just under 90 per cent, sitting at 86.6 per cent and 87.6 per cent respectively.
