Goldstein: Recount completed

Updated: 31 May 2025

The Australian Electoral Commission has today finalised the partial recount conducted in the electoral division of Goldstein (VIC).

The final margin after the partial recount is 175 in favour of Liberal Party candidate Tim Wilson. The change in margin from what it was after the completion of the distribution of preferences reflects the following:

  • Further determinations made on ballot paper formality as a result of challenges from candidate-appointed scrutineers.
  • A data entry error on a previous count that was picked up by the recount process (the purpose of the process).

As per previous media advice, the partial recount carefully re-examined all first preference votes for the two leading candidates and all informal ballot papers. This followed a full distribution of preferences process conducted on the seat of Goldstein that had a high degree of rigour.

The partial recount has been a methodical and highly transparent process with all counting activities throughout the entire counting period occurring in front of candidate appointed scrutineers.

A formal declaration of the poll for Goldstein will be held soon.
