Generation Y Voters' Experience Privacy Statement

The Generation Y Voters' Experience of Elections project (Gen Y Survey) issues this privacy statement to demonstrate our firm commitment to protecting the personal privacy of all survey participants. This statement aims to address collection, use, security of and access to personal information that may be obtained through the use of the AEC'S Gen Y Survey.

Privacy Act

The AEC makes every effort to comply with the Information Privacy Principles set out in section 14 of the Privacy Act 1988 (C'th). The Privacy Act 1988 (C'th) gives rights to individuals in relation to how personal information is handled by Commonwealth government agencies.

"Personal information" means any information from which your identity is apparent or can be reasonably ascertained. The AEC will not use your details for any other purpose, and will not disclose them to other persons or organisations without your consent or unless required or authorised to under the Privacy Act 1988.

Information Collected

When you complete the following survey, you may be asked to provide personal information such as: birth year, locality and contact details such as an email address, etc. Additionally, unless you otherwise consent, all answers and opinions provided throughout the survey will be de-identified.

Purpose and use of Information collected

Purpose:

The AEC's Gen Y Survey aims

"To examine the outreach and personal effect of AEC's public awareness campaigns and strategies on young citizens ('Generation Y') during the 2013 Federal Election period; and to identify emerging needs in electoral support for Generation Y."

Authorisation to collect:

While the AEC undertakes research of electoral matters in accordance with s.7(1)(e) of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Electoral Act), the collection of personal information for the purposes of this research is not required by the Electoral Act. Undertaking this survey is entirely optional.

Use of information:

The personal information provided by participants through the completion of this survey will be used by the AEC for the following purposes:

  • Reviewing AEC communication strategies and information delivery services

Information Disclosure

Personal Information collected from the Generation Y Survey will be for internal AEC use only. The information will not be disclosed, communicated or provided to any third party. The responses provided by survey participants will be de-identified before being used for analysis to identify trends and develop recommendations. A report of the findings will be delivered to the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC), and may be published on this website.

Security of Information

The personal information collected by the Generation Y Survey will stored on the AEC internal network, to which only authorised AEC employees shall have access. The AEC provides a secure and reliable system, but all participants should be aware that there may be inherent risks associated with the transmission of information via the Internet.

At the conclusion of the Generation Y research project on 30 November 2013 all personal information of participants will be de-identified and destroyed.
