The AEC undertakes regular research and analysis to build a strong evidence base to improve electoral participation, support the delivery of electoral services and contribute to electoral policy reform in Australia.
Some research activities are for internal use only, while others are made publicly available through various channels, such as the AEC website. The AEC also engages with other bodies (such as academic institutions, the State and Territory Electoral Commissioners and the Parliamentary Library) to discuss and progress research activities.
Research is a legislated function under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918.
