Candidates for the 2026 Farrer by-election will be officially declared at midday on Tuesday 14 April 2026 - the day after nominations close.
Following the declaration of candidates, the Divisional Returning Officer for Farrer will conduct a random draw for positions on the ballot paper in accordance with requirements of the Commonwealth Electoral Act. This is a public event with candidates, media representatives and members of the public welcome to attend.
The list of candidates, in ballot paper order, will be published on the AEC website later in the day. An image of the candidate list will also be shared via the AEC’s social media channels for those who were unable to attend.
The deadline for candidate nominations is fast approaching, with nominations closing at midday on Monday 13 April.
AEC State Manager for NSW Rebecca Main said that late nominations cannot be accepted so it is crucial for intending candidates to make sure they lodge their nomination on time.
“People wishing to nominate as a candidate in the Farrer by-election are running out of time,” Ms Main said.
“Clear guidance is available on the AEC website for both endorsed and unendorsed candidates to enable them to complete the required paperwork. Nomination forms require a lot of specific information and can take quite some time to properly complete. Candidates should not leave it to the last minute.”
Nomination forms have been available on the AEC website since the by-election was announced in early March.
