AEC returns writs for 2025 federal election

Updated: 12 June 2025

The Acting Electoral Commissioner today returned the writs for the 2025 federal election to the Governor-General, Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC.

What are writs?

A writ is an official document signed by the Governor-General commanding the Electoral Commissioner to hold an election and contains key dates for that election. The writ was required to be returned no later than 9 July 2025.

What writs were returned today?

  • Writs for all 150 House of Representatives elections
  • Writs for the two Senate elections in the territories (ACT and NT)

What is the timeframe for challenging the result of an election?

To challenge an election result, a petition must be filed with the High Court (in its capacity as the Court of Disputed Returns) within 40 days of the return of the writs today. As such, Tuesday 22 July is the last day a petition can be lodged for the above elections.

What about Senate writs for the states?

Writs for Senate elections in all six states had already been returned to State Governors throughout the past couple of weeks.
