Fadden by-election: Initial funding payments made

Updated: 16 August 2023

Parties that received the required four per cent of the formal first-preference vote cast at the Fadden by-election have each received an initial payment of $11,803.

The payments, amounting to $59,015 in total, have been made to the Australian Labor Party (ALP), Legalise Cannabis Australia, Liberal Party of Australia, Pauline Hanson’s One Nation and Queensland Greens.

The initial payment was not dependent on a demonstration of electoral expenditure – it is an automatic payment. It was required to be made as soon as practicable after the 20th day following election day.

Further election funding payments are subject to submission of a claim by the political party showing demonstrated electoral expenditure. The total amount payable is capped at the amount of actual electoral expenditure incurred by the political party. All claims are closely examined by the AEC before final payments are made, and many will be subject to a formal compliance review.

Election funding claims for further payments can be submitted to the AEC during the period from 4 August 2023 to 15 January 2024. The AEC will assess these claims and determinations will be published on the Transparency Register.
