Enrolment and Voting Information for people becoming Australian Citizens

One of the most important rights and responsibilities you will have as an Australian citizen is to enrol and vote.

Enrolment

Before you can vote, you will need to complete an electoral enrolment form so that your name can be put on the electoral roll for voting in federal, state or territory and local government elections.

Provisional Electoral Enrolment

If you have received notification form the Immigration Department that you will become an Australian citizen before polling day for the election you can complete and lodge the below form as soon as an election is announced.

At your Citizenship Ceremony

To help you to enrol as soon as you become an Australian citizen, you will receive an enrolment form printed with your personal details at your citizenship ceremony. All you will need to do is check your personal details, make any changes, sign the form, have it witnessed (where applicable) and return it to a staff member of either the Council or the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC). If you wish, you may return your completed enrolment form to the AEC by mail.

Enrolling to vote at federal elections is compulsory if you are 18 years of age or older, an Australian citizen and have lived at your present address for at least the last month.

If you are 17 years old, you may enrol but you will not be able to vote until you turn 18. However, it is not compulsory to enrol when you are 17.

If you do not receive an enrolment form you can download one or pick one up from any AEC, Medicare, Centrelink or Australian Taxation Office, Australia Post outlet or State/Territory Electoral Office.

Once an election is announced you only have a very short time to enrol if you are not already enrolled.  You need to update your enrolment every time you move.

Voting

All Australians who are eligible to vote, elect people to represent them in the two houses of Parliament - the Senate and the House of Representatives. Further information about voting is available at: http://www.aec.gov.au/Voting/index.htm
