AEC Graduate Program
Who we are
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is a small organisation with an enviable reputation for its performance.
The AEC is the federal agency responsible for managing federal elections and other important tasks such as managing and maintaining the electoral roll and assisting with industrial and state elections. The AEC also plays a major role in electoral education, aiming to educate citizens about the electoral process.
The perfect career path
The AEC’s 2009 Graduate Program starts in February 2009 and finishes in December 2009.
You will take part in a week-long induction program and then gain valuable skills and experience through a series of placements within the organisation. One of your placements will be a short term deployment to one of our interstate offices.
Our Graduate Program provides you with a wide variety of learning opportunities including on the job training, specific public sector training and seminar events and the House of Representatives training course.
When you’ve successfully completed the program, you can expect to be placed in a position where you can apply the skills and knowledge you’ve developed over the year. Further promotion is based on merit.
The AEC Graduate Program will provide you with the skills and knowledge needed to underpin a future career within the AEC and the wider Australian Public Service.
Who we are looking for
We are looking for graduates with a minimum three year undergraduate degree at credit level or above in fields including, Finance/Accounting, Project Management, Economics/Statistics or Communications/Journalism. We will also consider other areas/majors.
You can also apply for the Graduate Program if you are completing your final year of study or have completed your degree within the last five years.
In particular, we are looking for graduates with:
- Proven academic and broad life achievements;
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
- Experience in working effectively in teams;
- Flexibility and initiative;
- Strong strategic analytical and research skills;
- Leadership potential.
To be a graduate with the AEC, you must be an Australian citizen. You must also not be seen to be active in political affairs.
The AEC is responsible for providing the Australian people with an independent electoral service. It is essential that all AEC employees are, and are seen to be, politically neutral.

The AEC has great employment conditions and competitive pay for graduates.
- a starting salary of $46,959 (APS Level 3)
- a 37 ½ hour standard working week
- flex-time, so you can access the time you have accrued when you have worked extra hours in busy times
