17 July 2010
The 2010 federal election announcement means that Australians must act immediately to ensure they're correctly enrolled to vote for the Saturday 21 August federal election.
Enrol to vote in just three easy steps:
Electoral Commissioner, Ed Killesteyn said all Australian citizens aged 18 years and over are required by law to enrol and vote in the 2010 federal election. Anyone not enrolled must urgently complete an enrolment form and ensure the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) receives it before 8pm, Monday 19 July.
"It's important that all eligible Australians enrol now. Anyone not on the roll by the deadline won't be able to vote and have their say in the 2010 federal election.
"I also urge anyone who has moved address at any time and is not one hundred per cent sure that their enrolment details are up to date to act and check immediately. The AEC removes people from the roll who do not update their electoral roll details, and the deadline applies to these people also," Mr Killesteyn said.
If people are not sure if they're enrolled to vote, they can check at www.aec.gov.au/check or by calling 13 23 26. People can also pick up a paper enrolment form at any AEC, Australia Post, Centrelink or Medicare office. The location and contact details of AEC offices are available at www.aec.gov.au or by calling 13 23 26.
Australians who are already on the electoral roll and who have moved address have a little longer until 8pm Thursday 22 July 2010 to update their enrolment by lodging an updated enrolment form with the AEC.
