Media Release 2010: Public funding payments for Bradfield and Higgins by-elections

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has authorised the public funding payment for votes received at the 2009 Bradfield and Higgins by-elections held on 5 December 2009.
The total of the payments to political parties for the two by-elections was $260 069.41. No independent candidate qualified for public funding in either by-election.
In the Bradfield by-election, nine parties and five independent candidates contested the election and two parties were eligible for payment.
In the Higgins by-election, seven parties and three independent candidates contested the election and two parties were eligible for payment.
In order to obtain public funding a candidate must obtain at least four per cent of the formal first preference vote. Payments were calculated using an indexed rate per first preference vote, and at the 2009 Bradfield and Higgins by-elections each first preference vote was worth 224.851 cents.
