Media Release 2004: Two electoral divisions in the Northern Territory
27 April 2004
Electors in the Northern Territory will elect two members to the House of Representatives at the next federal election, following a Commonwealth Electoral Amendment Bill receiving Royal Assent on 20 April 2004.
The Commonwealth Electoral Amendment Act 2004 sets aside the Determination made in 2003, which saw the Northern Territory revert from two electoral divisions to one. The amendment means that the Northern Territory will comprise two electoral divisions, Lingiari and Solomon, on 28 April 2004.
"This amendment to the Commonwealth Electoral Act means that, at the next federal election, people enrolled to vote in the Northern Territory will again have the opportunity to vote for two members to represent them in the House of Representatives.
"The electoral boundaries for the Divisions of Lingiari and Solomon remain the same as in the 2001 election," said Mr Becker.
Mr Becker said that the Australian Electoral Commission will inform people in the Northern Territory of the polling arrangements for the two divisions in the lead up to the next election.
There are currently 56 680 people enrolled to vote in the Division of Lingiari and 52 629 people enrolled in the Division of Solomon.
People who have any queries about the Division they are enrolled in should contact the AEC on 13 23 26. Information about the change to the Northern Territory Divisions can be found on the AEC website, www.aec.gov.au
