The Redistribution Committee for Victoria today published details of the proposed new boundaries for Federal Electorates in Victoria.

The redistribution was achieved with minor changes to about 50 per cent of Victorian electoral Divisions. Most of the inner metropolitan electoral Divisions remain largely the same. Many country Divisions needed to increase in area to accommodate declining voter numbers.

High population growth, particularly in the outer northern and western suburbs, has resulted in significant changes in these areas. The most notable change is the replacement of the semi-rural Division of Burke with a new Division of Gorton centred on St Albans, Deer Park and Caroline Springs.

Victoria's entitlement remains at 37 Federal Electoral Divisions.

The number of voters transferred between Divisions is significantly less than previous Federal Redistributions in Victoria.

The opportunity exists for individuals or organisations to lodge objections against the proposed new boundaries. Objections must be lodged with the Electoral Commission by 6pm on Friday, 27 September, 2002 at Level 22, 2 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne.
