Media Release 2002: 1164 candidates running in the 2002 ATSIC elections
20 September 2002
Nominations for the ATSIC Regional Council Elections have been publicly announced around mainland Australia, following the close of nominations at 5pm on Wednesday 18 September 2002.
The Electoral Commissioner, Mr Andy Becker said that a total of 1164 candidates had nominated for the elections being held on Saturday 19 October, in all States and Territories excluding Tasmania.
"This is an increase of 120 candidates, compared to the 1044 nominations at the 1999 ATSIC elections," he said.
"It is very encouraging to see a considerable increase in the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in these elections."
The 1164 candidates are standing for 376 vacancies in the 115 wards with the polling day of 19 October. Nine of these wards will not be holding an election on polling day as the number of candidates was equal to or less than the number of vacancies.
A list of candidates for each of the 115 ATSIC wards will be available on the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au this afternoon (Friday 20 September). A copy of the full list will also be available by ringing the AEC Central Office on (02) 6271 4411.
Nominations for the three Tasmanian wards will open on Thursday 10 October and close at 5pm on Friday 25 October 2002, for their polling day of Tuesday 12 November 2002.
