Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters

The Joint Committee is one of several of the Commonwealth Parliament, and is established by a resolution of the House of Representatives and the Senate.

The role of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters is to inquire into and report on matters relating to electoral laws and practices and their administration, as may be referred to it by either House of the Parliament or a Minister. Typically, the Committee inquires into and reports on the conduct of federal election events. Other matters that may be referred by the House could include reports by the Commonwealth Auditor-General or inquires into matters raised in annual reports of Commonwealth Government departments and authorities.

Inquiry into the conduct of the 2013 Federal Election

On 5 December 2013, the Special Minister of State, the Senator the Hon Michael Ronaldson, asked the Committee to inquire into and report on all aspects of the conduct of the 2013 Federal Election and matters related thereto.

Inquiry into the conduct of the 2007 federal election and matters related thereto

On 27 February 2008, the Special Minister for State, Senator the Hon. John Faulkner, asked the Committee to inquire into and report on all aspects of the 2007 federal election and matters related thereto. On 12 March, the Senate referred a similar reference to the Committee. On 14 May, the Senate referred the Commonwealth Electoral (Above-the-Line Voting) Amendment Bill 2008 for inquiry and report as a part of the inquiry into the 2007 federal election. Inquiry into disclosure of donations to political parties and candidates

The previous Inquiry into disclosure of donations to political parties and candidates referred to the Committee on 4 March 2004 lapsed upon the dissolution of the 40th Parliament. On publication of the report into the 2004 federal election entitled "The 2004 Federal Election: Report of the Inquiry into the Conduct of the 2004 Federal Election and Matters Related Thereto", the Committee resumed its consideration of evidence presented to it in the course of the 39th and 40th Parliaments addressing funding and disclosure.
