Education Products and Services
The Education Section of the AEC aims to educate the Australian community about:
- The electoral processes by which we elect our representatives to the Commonwealth Parliament
- How we as Australian citizens are able to have a say in changing the Australian Constitution (referendums).
The outcome is to have informed citizens who actively participate in the democratic processes of electing our representatives and voting in referendums on Constitutional change.
The Australian Electoral Commission's education programs for schools and community groups include presentations on request by AEC divisional staff and sessions at our electoral education centres in Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide.
Professional development workshops are also conducted for educators who are or will be teaching electoral education as part of their civics and citizenship programs.
Resources that are available free of charge include pamphlets, booklets for school-based electoral education programs and videos.
Through our education programs and resources you can learn about:
- The role of the AEC
- The history of representative democracy in Australia
- The concept of representation
- How we elect our representatives to the Commonwealth parliament
- What happens in an election
- How a referendum is conducted
