Projection time
The projection time for a redistribution is calculated in accordance with section 63A of the Electoral Act.
The ‘starting time’ to calculate is the date when the augmented Electoral Commission will cause the names and boundaries of federal electorates in Queensland to be published in the Gazette. For this redistribution, the starting time is 22 September 2027.
An earlier projection time may be required if the Electoral Commission has reasonable belief that the number of electorates the state or territory is entitled to may change within seven years of a redistribution being determined. In this circumstance, the Electoral Commission may determine the projection time will be a time that is halfway between the starting time for the projection and the time when, in the opinion of the Electoral Commission, the further redistribution will or may be required.
On 24 July 2026, the Electoral Commission noted that there was reasonable belief, based on population data and projections from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, that Queensland’s entitlement to the number of members of the House of Representatives may change when entitlement is next determined after the next federal election.
Therefore, the projection time for the Queensland redistribution has been varied from the standard period. The projection time for this redistribution is 27 August 2028.
Projected enrolment quota
The projected enrolment quota is calculated by dividing the projected enrolment numbers in Queensland at the projection time by the number of members of the House of Representatives to which Queensland is entitled.
