Queensland federal redistribution

The information provided on these pages is for the redistribution of federal electoral divisions in Queensland.  Information about the redistribution of Queensland state electoral boundaries is available from the Electoral Commission of Queensland.

0. Deferral of redistribution

The redistribution of Queensland’s 30 electoral divisions has been deferred as of Tuesday 12 August 2025 until after the Electoral Commissioner’s next entitlement determination. This follows on from the initial deferral on 28 March 2025 due to the commencement originally falling within the last 12 months of the 47th Parliament. The reasons for these deferrals are outlined below.

0.1 Initial deferral of redistribution

On 28 March 2025 the Acting Electoral Commissioner announced the redistribution of Queensland’s 30 electoral divisions would not commence until after the House of Representatives in the 48th Parliament has met for the first time. This occurred on 22 July 2025.

The deferral was required by the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Electoral Act) as the commencement fell within the last 12 months of the 47th Parliament.

Basis for deferral

Section 59 of the Electoral Act sets out the requirements for the Queensland redistribution to be deferred.

0.2 Further deferral of redistribution

On Tuesday 12 August 2025 the three-person Electoral Commission announced the redistribution of Queensland’s 30 federal electoral divisions will not commence until after the Electoral Commissioner has made their determination of the number of members of the House of Representatives each state and territory will be entitled to at the next general election. The Electoral Commissioner’s determination is due to be made on or after Thursday 23 July 2026.

The three-person Electoral Commission directed the deferral of the redistribution as they are of the opinion that the Electoral Commissioner’s determination may change the number of members of the House of Representatives to be elected in Queensland at the next election. This opinion is based on projected population figures provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Regardless of whether Queensland’s entitlement changes, the next redistribution of federal electoral divisions in Queensland is expected to begin in mid-2026.

Basis for further deferral

Section 59 of the Electoral Act sets out the requirements for the Queensland redistribution to be deferred.
