Your name will be retained on the electoral roll and you may vote for federal elections in person, or by post, at any overseas polling place. The location and contact details of overseas polling places will be available on our website closer to the election. They include most Australian Embassies, Consulates and High Commissions.

You will not be able to vote while overseas, you may re-enrol when you return to Australia and have lived at your residential address for one month. The removal process requires the AEC to issue formal written advice to an elector.

The Commonwealth

The Australian Electoral Commission is authorised under the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 to collect the information you have been asked to complete on this form. The information provided will assist the Australian Electoral Commission to maintain electoral rolls. The Australian Electoral Commission may disclose electoral information to persons or organisations in accordance with the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918. This may include:

  • access to the publicly available electoral roll (containing names and addresses) which may be inspected at electoral offices.
  • State and Territory electoral authorities.
  • Members of Parliament, Senators, registered political parties, and candidates for the House of Representatives.
  • approved medical research and public health screening programs.
  • any agencies, persons or organisations prescribed in the Electoral and Referendum Regulation 2016.

The AEC may seek further information from you or provide you with information about the progress of your application using any of the contact details you provide on your application form. If you are a postal voter with an overseas postal address, your contact details may be displayed on the outside of the postal vote package containing ballot papers so the AEC’s agents may contact you to facilitate delivery.
