The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) confirmed today the by-election for the federal electoral Division of Canning will be held on Saturday 19 September 2015.
Australian Electoral Officer for Western Australia, Marie Neilson said people living in the Division of Canning must act now to ensure they are correctly enrolled to vote.
“All Australian citizens aged 18 years and over living in the Division of Canning are required by law to enrol and vote in the by-election on Saturday 19 September,” Ms Neilson said.
“A convenient way to enrol is online.
“If you’re already on the roll but recently moved, you will need to update your enrolment details online.
Alternatively, you can pick up an enrolment application at any AEC office, Australia Post outlet and Centrelink or Medicare service centres in Canning.
The AEC must receive your completed enrolment application before 8pm AWST Monday 24 August 2015.
Ms Neilson said that the redistribution of federal electoral boundaries currently underway in Western Australia has no effect on the Canning by-election.
“The electoral boundaries that applied to the last federal election will also apply to the Canning by-election.”
Ms Neilson urged people who were unsure if they are living in the Division of Canning to check, in order to make sure they don’t miss out on their vote.
“To check if you live in the division of Canning or to make sure your enrolment details are up to date, check online or call 13 23 26.
“If you are not enrolled by 8pm AWST Monday 24 August you won’t be able to vote in the Canning by-election.”
Seventeen year-old Australians who live in Canning and turn eighteen on or before Saturday 19 September 2015 may also enrol now and vote in the Canning by-election.
