Summary Statement of Reasons

Updated: 3 March 2014

This document is published as a summary statement of reasons as to why, on 20 February 2014, the Australian Electoral Commission, through its nominated delegate, approved an application by the Australian Stable Population Party under s.134 of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918, to change its registered name and abbreviation respectively to “#Sustainable Population Party” and “Sustainable Population Party”.

Legislative provisions

The legislative provisions governing applications to change a party’s details in the Register of Political Parties are in Part XI of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (the Act). An extract of the relevant provisions is available.

Background

On 4 December 2013, the Australian Electoral Commission (the AEC) received an application under s.134 of the Act from the Australian Stable Population Party (the Party) to change its registered name and abbreviation under the provisions of Part XI of the Act. The new name sought was the ‘#Sustainable Population Party’ and the new abbreviation sought was ‘Sustainable Population Party’. The abbreviation at the time of the application had been ‘Stable Population Party’.

Delay

There was a delay in the processing of this application until 19 February 2014 through the effect of s.127 of the Act during the Griffith by-election.

The determination

The application met all of the relevant legislative requirements.  A notice of the application was advertised in accordance with s.132 of the Act and no objection to the application was received in the prescribed timeframe. The delegate then proceeded to make a determination.

On 20 February 2014, Seema Srivastava, Assistant Commissioner, Funding and Disclosure Branch, as a delegate of the AEC for the purposes of s.134(3) of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918, approved the application of the Australian Stable Population Party to change its registered name and abbreviation as set out below and for the Register of Political Parties to be amended accordingly.

Previous Name of party: Australian Stable Population Party
New Name of party: #Sustainable Population Party

Previous Abbreviation of party name: Stable Population Party
New abbreviation of party name: Sustainable Population Party
