What is the purpose of lodging an Expression of Interest?
The AEC maintains a register of persons interested in temporary employment for defined electoral events.
All persons interested in temporary employment MUST complete an Expression of Interest form [PDF 98k] to be considered for temporary employment opportunities and to have their names placed on the Register for Temporary Employment.
Expressions of Interest are used to determine suitability for temporary employment.
Your Expression of Interest form should contain sufficient relevant information to enable an assessment to be made.
How do I express an interest in temporary employment?
Expression of Interest forms may be downloaded for completion and lodged with the AEC office where you wish to be considered for temporary employment.
What happens when I submit my Expression of Interest?
The AEC assesses all Expressions of Interest for temporary employment on merit having regard to the person's work related qualities which include skills and abilities, relevant personal qualities and the ability to contribute to a team environment.
Your Expression of Interest will be considered in conjunction with Expresssions of Interest submitted by others and an order of merit determined. Interviews may be conducted in an AEC office, where practical, and time permits. In other instances telephone interviews may be conducted.
A reference may be required to enable the assessment of your Expression of Interest therefore you will be asked to supply the names and contact details of two referees.
In some situations, particularly in capital cities where travel is not an impediment, your Expression of Interest may be forwarded to another AEC location for their consideration when staffing action for an election is underway.

Expressions of Interest for temporary employment will not be acknowledged.
What if I change address after submitting an Expression of Interest?
You should advise the AEC of your updated contact details and ensure that you complete a new enrolment form in accordance with legislation. Your Expression of Interest may then be forwarded to another office of the AEC for consideration.
What if I'm offered temporary employment?
You will be sent a formal Offer of Temporary Employment together with other employment-related forms and information to complete and return.
Temporary Office Assistants receive on-the-job training.
Electoral Roll Review Officers must attend formal training session.
Employment for certain Polling Officials requires participation in formal training. Training may be undertaken face-to-face with some home study using manuals and other learning aids. In some instances, training may be undertaken using the Internet.
