Review of AEC funding and disclosure functions

Updated: 6 December 2012

Full report

In August 2012, the Electoral Commissioner announced an independent review of the AEC's disclosure and compliance function and the way we monitor political donations under Part XX of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Electoral Act). The review was led by former Commonwealth Ombudsman, Mr Ron McLeod AM, with assistance from PriceWaterhouseCoopers, and is now complete.

Mr McLeod's report makes four recommendations:

  1. Expand the program of compliance reviews based on a broader use of existing powers under the Electoral Act
  2. Adopt a new business model for the compliance function
  3. Establish a new branch to administer the funding, disclosure and compliance schemes
  4. Further develop the FAD IT system as an integrated system for the proposed new branch

The Electoral Commissioner is now considering the recommendations.
