1421 Candidates Running in the 2004 Federal Election

A total of 1421 candidates throughout Australia are contesting the 2004 Federal Election on Saturday 9 October.
This figure includes 330 candidates for the Senate and 1091 candidates for the House of Representatives.
This is an increase of 97 candidates at the 2001 election where a total of 1324 candidates nominated.
At the 2004 election, a total of 406 female and 1014 male candidates have nominated. (In one case gender details were not supplied.)
All but one of the candidate nominations were officially declared at 12 noon Friday 17 September at events throughout Australia. In the Division of Kalgoorlie due to the death of an intending candidate, declaration of nominations occurred at 12 noon Saturday 18 September.

The printing of the ballot papers is underway, with the first available ballot papers to be distributed to the 150 AEC divisional offices around Australia and to overseas voting posts to enable early voting to commence.
