Media Release 2010: AEC invites suggestions into Victorian electoral redistribution
12 March 2010
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is inviting the public to submit suggestions about the redistribution of federal electoral boundaries in Victoria.
The Electoral Commissioner, Mr Ed Killesteyn, is asking all interested individuals and organisations to provide written suggestions and comments about the redistribution of the 37 electoral divisions.
"Written submissions must be lodged with the Redistribution Committee by 6pm AEST on Friday, 9 April 2010 to allow them to be considered," Mr Killesteyn said.
Mr Killesteyn said in making its proposal of new electoral boundaries, the Committee must ensure that the number of electors in each division meets strict numerical criteria.
"The Committee will take into account communities of interest and means of communications and travel within the proposed divisions. The physical features and area of the proposed divisions and the boundaries of existing divisions in Victoria will also be considered," he added.
Members of the Redistribution Committee will include the Electoral Commissioner and the Australian Electoral Officer (State Manager) for Victoria, Mrs Jenni McMullan. The Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 also requires that two senior state officials participate on the Committee.
Mr Killesteyn said individuals and organisations intending to submit suggestions about the boundaries or names of the electoral divisions should visit the AEC website for further information about the redistribution process.
Suggestions and comments must be lodged with the Redistribution Committee for Victoria in one of the following ways:
- in person to 8th floor, Casselden Place, 2 Lonsdale St, Melbourne, VIC 3000
- by mail to GPO Box 768G, Victoria, VIC 3001
- by fax to (03) 9285 7169
- by email to vicredistribution@aec.gov.au
The Committee will continue its consultation process by making all public suggestions received available for public inspection at the AEC State Office in Melbourne and on the AEC website from 12 April 2010.
The public have until 6pm AEST on 23 April 2010 to lodge any written comments they may have on the suggestions.
