Media Release 2008: 2008 Gippsland by-election payment of public funding to political parties

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has authorised the public funding payment to political parties for votes received at the 2008 Gippsland by-election.

The total of the payment is $178 174.26. All five parties who contested the election were eligible for payment.

Payments are calculated using an indexed sum per first preference vote. At the 2008 Gippsland by-election, each first preference vote was worth 214.018 cents.

In order to obtain public funding a candidate must obtain at least 4% of the first preference vote.

The breakdown of payment for the 2008 Gippsland by-election is as follows:
