Young people urged to enrol to vote during National Youth Week
During National Youth Week – between 5 and 13 April 2008 – the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is encouraging all young Australians to enrol to vote and to make sure their enrolment is up to date.
Electoral Commissioner Ian Campbell said enrolling to vote was an important step for young people and means they can have their say in federal, state and local government elections.
“To enrol for the first time, fill out an enrolment form and return it to the AEC. Even if you are only 17 you can complete the form now, and you will be automatically enrolled on your eighteenth birthday.”
“If you are already enrolled and have moved since the last federal election, you can check that your address details are up to date on either the AEC website or by calling the AEC on 13 23 26,” Mr Campbell said.
To update your details, fill out an enrolment form and return it to the AEC.
Enrolment forms can be downloaded from the AEC website and are also available at any Australia Post outlet, Medicare, Centrelink, or Australian Tax Office and selected Rural Transaction Centres, in addition to any AEC office.
