Provisional voters need to provide identification to the AEC by this Friday

27 November 2007

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is reminding electors who cast a provisional vote on election day and did not provide evidence of their identity, that they need to fulfil this requirement with the AEC by Friday 30 November.

Electoral Commissioner, Ian Campbell, said voters may have cast a provisional vote on election day because their name or address could not be found on the list of voters or it appeared their name had already been marked off.

“Provisional voters who did not provide identification at the polling place were given a ‘voter advice document’ informing them they needed to do so with the AEC by this Friday.”

Voters can visit an AEC office to show an accepted proof of identity document or they can mail a photocopy of the document, provided it has been sighted and signed by an authorised person, to an AEC office.

“The AEC must receive a provisional voter’s evidence of identity by 5pm on Friday 30 November in order for the vote to be considered,” Mr Campbell said.

Evidence of identity requirements for provisional votes were part of the legislation passed by the Federal Parliament in 2006 and this requirement only applies to provisional voters.

Provisional votes are only counted after a careful check of enrolment records are made to confirm the provisional elector’s eligibility.
