Early voting begins in the 2007 federal election
Electors unable to vote on election day on Saturday 24 November, are now able to cast an early vote in person or by post, the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) announced today.
The Electoral Commissioner, Ian Campbell said electors who were eligible can cast an early vote in person at any of the 429 early voting centres operating around Australia.
Electors are eligible for an early vote if on election day they will be interstate or overseas; more than 8km from a polling place; approaching childbirth; seriously ill or caring for someone who is; or unable to attend a polling place due to religious beliefs, disability or work commitments.
The early voting centres will be open until Friday 23 November, the day before election day. To find the location and operating hours of the nearest early voting centre, visit the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au or call 13 23 26.
Mr Campbell said that electors unable to vote in person, before or on election day, could apply now for a postal vote.
“Postal vote application forms are available from the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au or at any AEC office or Australia Post outlet,” he said.
“Once the AEC receives the application form, the postal voting materials are sent to the elector. Electors registered as a General Postal Voter do not need to apply, as their ballot papers will be automatically sent.”
“All postal voters must ensure their completed ballot papers are back in the mail to the AEC, or hand delivered to an AEC office, before election day on Saturday 24 November,” he said.
For further information on casting an early vote, visit www.aec.gov.au or call the AEC on 13 23 26.
