Augmented Electoral Commission Decides Boundaries and Names for Federal Electoral Divisions in QLD

11 September 2006

The augmented Electoral Commission for Queensland today announced the outcome of its deliberations on the boundaries and names for the 29 federal electoral divisions in Queensland, in accordance with a requirement of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918.

The Hon James Burchett QC, the presiding member of the augmented Commission, said that it had adopted the redistribution proposed by the Redistribution Committee for Queensland, which was published on 23 June 2006, with some changes.

Details of the augmented Commission’s proposed redistribution are explained in the attachment to this media release and can be seen in the indicative maps available on the AEC’s website at the following link: http://www.aec.gov.au/Electorates/Past_Redistributions/2005/Queensland/Announcement.htm

The augmented Commission considers that its proposal is not significantly different from that proposed by the Redistribution Committee for Queensland. Thus, a further objection period and further hearings are not required.

Final maps and a report setting out the Commission’s reasons will be prepared for tabling in the Parliament and then published. At the same time the formal determination of the names and boundaries of the electoral divisions will be gazetted.

Detailed information can be obtained from the AEC website at the following link: http://www.aec.gov.au/Electorates/Past_Redistributions/index.htm The June 2006 report of the Redistribution Committee can also be accessed under this heading.
