Media Release 2002: Election funding for the Cunningham by-election

The Australian Electoral Commission today announced payment of the election funding entitlements following the Cunningham by-election.
The entitlement to election funding is set out in Division 3, Part XX of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (the CEA). Section 299 of the CEA requires that at least 95% of the entitlement to election funding, calculated based on the number of votes counted by the 20th day after polling day, be paid as soon as possible after the 20th day after polling day.
As the writ for the Cunningham by-election was returned prior to the 20th day after polling, the full entitlement can be paid.
Political parties, which endorse candidates and independent candidates may receive election funding provided the candidates receive at least 4% of the formal first preference vote in the election they contested.
The current rate of funding entitlement is 184.253 cents per formal first preference vote.
