Media Release 2001: Reminder to Meet Enrolment Deadline

Updated: 11 October 2010

11 October 2001

There has been a last minute rush from people wanting to enrol to vote, or update their enrolment details for the 2001 federal election.

The Australian Electoral Commissioner, Mr Andy Becker, said today that voters only had until 8pm Monday 15 October to make sure that they were correctly enrolled to vote in Election 2001.

"It may be too late now to post their enrolment card as it must be received by the Electoral Commission by 8pm Monday 15 October," Mr Becker said.

"To ensure their enrolment card is received in time, people should take it to, or fax it to their nearest AEC office."

Mr Becker said that it was important that enrolment cards were received before the cut-off so that all eligible electors were able to have their say.

Anyone who submits a late enrolment form will receive a notice from the AEC and if they are new enrollees, will be unable to vote, in Election 2001. Electors who submitted a change of address after the close of rolls should check with the AEC to see if they are still entitled to vote by phoning 13 23 26.

Enrolling and voting in Australia's federal elections and referendums is compulsory for all Australian citizens aged 18 years or older.

Enrolment forms are available from Post Offices, AEC offices, or the AEC website at www.aec.gov.au.
