Media Release 2001: Melbourne City Council Election - Record Number of Candidates

Nominations for the 2001 Melbourne City Council election closed at 4.00pm yesterday. A record total of 135 candidates have nominated for the election. Nineteen teams have nominated for the Leadership Team election which will determine the Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor. A further 97 candidates, comprising groups and single candidates, have nominated for the Councillor election which will determine the other seven councillor positions.

The Returning Officer, Ray Levingston, has reminded all eligible electors that this election is a postal ballot. "Ballot packs containing information on candidates, voting instructions and ballot papers will be mailed to all electors" he said.

Mr Levingston added, "if electors have any further enquiries they can contact the AEC on 1300 302 244 or visit our website www.aec.gov.au."

Voters who will be absent during the election period, 2 July 2001 to 20 July 2001, are encouraged to contact the AEC to discuss alternative arrangements.
