It takes more than just voters and candidates to have an election. According to the Australian Electoral Commission, the following will be needed for Election 2001.

  • 133,000 voting screens
  • 22,200 large ballot boxes
  • 19,600 small ballot boxes
  • 10,400 queuing signs
  • 6,500 tables
  • 13,000 litter bins
  • 7,703 polling places operating from 8am to 6pm
  • approximately 60,000 casual workers
  • 950 tonnes of paper
  • 600,000 postal vote envelopes
  • 3.3 million envelopes for declaration votes

The AEC points out that whenever possible all cardboard and paper materials produced are made from recycled materials and are in turn recycled.
