1324 Candidates to Contest 2001 Federal Election

Election 2001 has attracted 1324 candidates.

This figures includes 285 candidates for the Senate and 1039 candidates for the House of Representatives.

Nominations were publicly declared at 12 noon today.

Figures released by the Australian Electoral Commission indicate that:

  • 111 less candidates have nominated than for the last federal election in 1998; and
  • 381 female candidates and 943 males have nominated.

Printing of the ballot papers will now commence and they will be distributed to the AEC’s 150 Divisional offices and to 100 overseas voting posts to enable pre-poll voting to begin in Australia and overseas.

Electors who can’t get to a polling place on polling day can either visit the AEC’s website at www.aec.gov.au or call the AEC on 13 23 26 to find out where they can cast a pre-poll vote.
