The Australian Electoral Commission today announced that it has finalised election funding payments following the Newcastle supplementary election held on 21 November 1998. Total election funding paid at this election was $98,291.16.

Payments were made as follows:

Australian Labor Party $51,000.45

A total of $33,822,496.27 in election funding was paid at the 3 October federal election. The rate of election funding at both elections was 162.210 cents per formal first preference vote.

Candidates become entitled to a payment of election funding if they obtain at least 4% of the formal first preference vote. The entitlements of candidates endorsed by a registered political party are paid to the appointed agent of the party, while those for independent candidates are paid directly to the candidate.

This supplementary election was held due to the death of a candidate standing in the division of Newcastle at the 3 October federal election.
