Media Release 1998: 1998 Federal Election Funding Payments Announced

Updated: 2 September 2010

29 October 1998

The Australian Electoral Commission today announced that an interim election funding payment totalling $31 103 228.82 has been paid following the 1998 federal election. The amount paid represents 95% of entitlements calculated as at 23 October 1998 on the basis of votes cast at the 3 October general election for the Australian Parliament. The outstanding entitlement will be paid when the vote count figures are finalised.

Candidates and Senate Groups become entitled to a payment of election funding if they obtain at least 4% of the formal first preference vote. The entitlements of candidates endorsed by a registered political party are paid to the party, while those for independent candidates are paid directly to the candidate.

The rate of election funding at this election was 162.210 cents per formal first preference vote for both the House of Representatives and Senate.

Election disclosure returns become available for public inspection at the Commission’s Head Offices in each capital city on Monday 22 March 1999.

Attached is a break-up of the entitlements of parties and candidates paid this week.
