Media Release 1998: 1435 Candidates to Contest the 1998 Federal Election

A total of 1435 candidates have nominated for the federal election to be held on Saturday 3 October 1998.

This figures includes 329 candidates for the Senate and 1106 candidates for the House of Representatives.

Nominations for the 1998 federal election closed at 12 noon, Thursday 10 September and were publicly declared at 12 noon today.

Figures released by the Australian Electoral Commission following the declaration of nominations indicate that:

  • 272 more candidates have nominated than for the last federal election in 1996; and
  • 400 female candidates have nominated and 1035 males have nominated.

A full list of nominations for each State and Territory is available from the AEC's Head Office in each capital city during normal business hours.

A full Australia wide list is available from the AEC's Central office in Canberra during normal business hours or may be accessed on the AEC's Internet home page at www.aec.gov.au from Sunday 13 September 1998.

Printing of the ballot papers will now commence and they will be distributed to the AEC's 148 Divisional offices and to 99 overseas voting posts to enable pre-poll voting to begin in Australia and overseas.

Electors who can't get to a polling place on polling day can call the AEC on 13 23 26 to find out where they can cast a pre-poll vote.
